Goat's Milk Ice Cream
By now, everybody knows that happy cows come from California. What people may not know is that California has been the leading dairy state for 20 years, surpassing Wisconsin in terms of dairy production in 1993.
California also leads the dairy industry in exploring the use of goat's milk as an alternative to cow's milk as a beverage, in butter and cheese, and now, in ice cream!
In 2006, Laura Howard left her ambitious, fast-paced life as a Hollywood producer and moved to Petaluma, where she bought a goat farm and started producing the world's first goat's milk ice cream. Laura's crazy idea was born of necessity—she had embarked on a special diet which allowed no dairy other than goat's milk and either had to come up with a way to make goat's milk ice cream or give up her pint-a-week ice cream habit.
Lã Loo's (pronounced Lay Looz) Goat's Milk Ice Cream Company joined the natural food revolution in Somona County, utilizing local ingredients and, of course, goat's milk, which Laura describes as being "as close to a perfect food as possible in nature."
The company has since been rebranded as Funny Farm and creates a variety of goat’s milk-based products, including macaroni and cheese.
Goat's milk has many health benefits over cow's milk—it is more easily digested and naturally much lower in fat.
Funny Farm’s Goat's Milk Ice Cream Company currently offers the following flavors: Vanilla Snowflake, Deep Chocolate, Mystic Strawberry, and Mint Chocolate Chip.
